GIMP, Image editing software on Ubuntu

GIMP image editor on ubuntu

If you are coming from windows or mac and you like editing pictures, you probably familiar with adobe photoshop software. Well, on ubuntu we don't have photoshop, but we got GIMP, software that can work exactly like photoshop.

Using GIMP you can edit pictures from various format (JPEG, PNG, etc), and the great thing about it is that unlike photoshop, GIMP is totally free to use, GIMP is an open source software.

To install GIMP on ubuntu is fairly simple, all you need to do is install package called 'gimp' using command line or graphical using ubuntu software. Installing using command line would be something like this:
sudo apt-get install gimp
The size of the package is approximately 92MB (yours could be different), once installed you can search on ubuntu dash 'gimp', click on the icon and gimp will show up.

I believe all the functionality of photoshop is available on GIMP as well, but the way you operate GIMP is little bit different, so you just need to get used to it, at first there's little bit of learning curve, but once you master GIMP, you probably never go back to photoshop.

  1. You can do it with another photo editing app - PicsArt. It is one of the most popular photo editor apps on Android and for good reason. It has probably every single tool you would need for basic and advanced photo editing, from different crop tools to background removal and even the ability to add text and multiple image layers just like more advanced programs like Photoshop.

  2. I use GIMP for photo editing task. No doubt, it's a professional image editing tool. But the app has some disadvantages:

    1. GIMP cannot handle anything other than 8bit RGB, grayscale as well as indexed images.

    2. It contains limited third-party plugins compare to photoshop.

    3. GIMP does not perform well if you need to edit big images with lots of layers.
